Electrify Arlington, a program of the Town of Arlington, invited residents to attend an open house scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at the Arlington Community Center, to learn about ways to save money on energy bills.

The open house, scheduled in the café and game room at the former senior center on 27 Maple St., provided information about discounted electricity and gas rates, fuel assistance, replacement appliances and energy-efficiency program.

A news release said that the event aimed to be help lower-income residents, and that people of all income levels are welcome to learn about saving energy and money.

Electrify Arlington said it also can help residents in "means-tested programs" to fill out applications to receive 42 percent off their electric bill and 25 percent off their gas bill. Some residents may also qualify for no-cost replacement of an inefficient refrigerator or other appliances.

To determine eligibility, attendees should bring utility bills/account numbers, plus an ID card or letter of acceptance from at least one means-tested program that they currently participate in. The means-tested progams that qualify are as follows:

  • SNAP
  • WIC
  • SSI (disability)
  • Mass Health (basic/standard)
  • Head Start
  • School breakfast/lunch
  • Fuel assistance
  • Commonwealth Care Plan (Types 1, 2, or 3a)
  • Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children
  • Emergency Aid to Elders, Disabled, and Children
  • Veterans Service Benefits (Ch. 115)
  • Veterans Non-Service Disability Benefit
  • Veterans DIC (surviving parent or spouse)
  • Health Safety New Plan (Primary/Secondary)

Beneficiaries of energy discounts need to reapply for these discounted utility rates every year. Those who think that they still are on the discounted rate are advised to check their most recent bills. If the rate code is R-2 or R-4, they are on the discounted rate ;however,  if it's R-1 or R-3, they are not.
